Camellia fraterna

While searching for wild plants of C. chekiangoleosa in Zhejiang province, we saw this species growing along the road in abundance under young trees. It was blooming heavily in February and we even found one with slightly pink flowers. Mostly the flowers are white and about 1.5 to 2 inches across. The heavy bloom can weigh down the longer branches into graceful arches. The small leaves usually have a distinctly pointed tip. Fun Fact: The hexaploid chromosome number allows hybrids to be made with a range of species. Some of our successes include 'Yoi Machi', 'Crimson Candles' and 'Tiny Princess'.

Hardy to USDA Zone: 8a
