Shipping FAQ

When should I place my order?

Orders are tagged on a first come-first serve basis.  As soon as you see something you like, go ahead and order it!  Whether it's December in Ohio and you can't plant until spring, or the scorching heat of mid-July everywhere - we'll tag your plant "sold" and hold it in our greenhouses until your requested ship date.

Occasionally, we'll have an extended freeze and lose plants.  If this occurs and your plant is affected, we'll tag a new one for you before tagging a later order or making that cultivar available for sale to our visitors.

When is the best time to ship?

We do not recommend shipping from June 1st through September 15th, for a number of reasons.  First and foremost, we start the process of pruning and repotting in May and the plants require a month or two of regular watering and plenty of sunlight to fully recover.  Being trapped in a cardboard box without access to either during this time, especially for long trips, can severely impact the health of the plants.  When combined with the extremely high temperatures possible in the back of a semi or delivery truck (they can easily reach and will often exceed 110°F on any hot, summer day, regardless of your climate zone), it's a recipe for disaster.  As such, we will not guarantee, replace, or refund orders shipped during this time.

Camellias travel well any other time of year, but do best while they're both dormant and won't be exposed to extreme temperatures; for most areas, this translates to late winter into early spring.  We will not ship an order if temperatures below 25°F are expected anywhere along it's route.

Spring shipping and planting offer the advantages of a) requiring less-frequent watering during summer dry spells and b) giving the plant plenty of time to get established before Old Man Winter settles in for the season.

In milder climates, however, our plants are perfectly happy to be shipped in the fall, throughout winter, and into spring.  In these areas, Camellias can also be planted year-round, though special protection may be necessary if unusually low temperatures are expected.

How will my order be shipped?

All of our plants are shipped via FedEx Ground/Home Delivery, no signature required.  Your "Ship To" address absolutely must be a physical address; business or residential.  You will receive an email with tracking information directly from FedEx (check spam!) on the day your order leaves the nursery.  ***If you've had issues with FedEx deliveries in the past and would prefer a different carrier, please contact us for rates prior to placing your order.

Orders that include only seed packets and/or books are mailed First-Class with the US Postal Service (USPS), without tracking numbers.  You'll receive an email from us when your order leaves the nursery and your package will typically arrive in your mail or PO box within 5 business days.

What day will my order ship?

As a rule, we ship as early in the week as possible so that your plants don't spend the weekend in transit.

When will I receive my order?

Orders typically arrive Wednesday through Saturday.  We do our absolute best to get your order shipped during the week of your specified earliest ship date.  Please keep in mind that extended transit times dictate that orders headed to WA, OR, CA, ID, NV, and MT can only be shipped on Mondays, so orders to closer locales may be put off until later in the week.

When preparing shipments, we have to take into account possible temperature extremes between the nursery and the destination. Though your plant's packaging provides a good bit of insulation against the cold, we may delay shipment if a hard freeze is expected somewhere along it's path.  Due to the quantity of orders we process daily and the mercurial nature of winter weather, we may not be able to inform you if this is the case.  If you are concerned about the timing of your order, please send us an email.

How is shipping calculated?

Your shipping cost is calculated using your order total and "Ship to" address.

I live nearby.  Can I order online and pick up in-person?

Absolutely!  Simply choose "Nursery pick-up" as your shipping option at check out, and send us an email to let us know when you'd like to come by.  We'll have your plants pulled and ready for you upon arrival, but please keep in mind that appointments are required Monday through Friday.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes and no.  Seeds can easily be shipped almost anywhere, and tolerate the travel well.  Living plants, however, are subject to various agricultural import and export regulations.  As a result, we do not ship plants across national borders.
