Japanese cedar is in the cypress family and is a needled evergreen. All cryptomeria japonica cultivars prefer moist, well-drained and acidic soils with high organic content, but they are adaptable to other conditions once established. They are all hardy to the -5 to -10 Fahrenheit range (zone 6). Light requirements can vary, anywhere from full sun to partial sun to dappled sun.
