Abies nordmanniana, Nordmann Fir

Also known as the Caucasian or Christmas tree fir and named after Alexander Davidovic von Nordmann, a Finnish biologist who discovered the tree in 1836. Native to the Caucasus mountains, it grows to 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide in cultivation, but may get much taller in its native habitat.

In the right spot it will grow in zone 7 and 8, but is more suited for zones 4-6. It dislikes hot, dry weather and clay soils and prefers acidic and well-drained soils. Site carefully in warmer zones for good soil drainage. Full sun to partial shade.
