Chanoyu:  A Demonstration of the Japanese Tea Ceremony for “Thin” Tea

Over the last seven hundred years in Japan, the procedure for making and sharing a bowl of matcha has been honed to an elegant and mindful process.  Workshop participants will have the opportunity to experience chanoyu, this traditional practice of the Japanese tea ceremony.  Laurie Fais, the host for the workshop, will give a brief explanation of the history and intention of the ceremony, and will demonstrate the making of a bowl of “thin” tea in the summer version of the ceremony.  Guests need have no prior experience or knowledge of the tea ceremony!

Note: Maximum enrollment is 12 guests - a limited number will be seated on the tatami mats on the floor.  If you are comfortable sitting on the floor, and would like to do that, please bring or wear a pair of white socks. Other guests will be seated in chairs or on benches. All guests will be served a small sweet and a bowl of matcha.

Laurie studied tea ceremony for ten years while living in Japan and for an additional ten years in North America (and counting!).  The demonstration and ceremony will be in the Camellia Forest Nursery and Tea Gardens' community tea studio
