Also called "False Holly", among many others. Like Osmanthus fragrans, Osmanthus heterophyllus is also in the Olive family and has small fragrant flowers, but its leaves are small and spiny and a very dark green, and it is more cold tolerant (to the 0-5 degree Fahrenheit range).
'Gulftide' can reportedly flourish in full shade and for us it is narrower than other heterophyllus.
Growth rate, habit: vigorous, upright
Mature size: 10-15ft high and 5-7ft wide or more
Soil/water: well-drained and acidic/moist
Cold hardiness temperature: at least 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit (zone 7)
Light: sun to part-shade and full shade
Blooms: small and white, fragrant
Features: The small leaves have spines on them, a great substitute for a holly
Special considerations: more cold tolerant than other Osmanthus species.
