Also known as Hardy Orange or Flying Dragon, Poncirus trifoliata var. monstrosa is a cold hardy, drought tolerant, and thorny deciduous shrub or small tree in the citrus family. It has white flowers in spring to early summer and will produce small yellow/orange fruits in late summer to fall. The edible fruits are very acidic and seedy and are primarily used for flavoring. It has a contorted habit with branches that grow in a corkscrew or zig zag pattern as well as curved thorns. Interesting fact: Poncirus is commonly used as rootstock for other citrus.
Site carefully as it can spread and is very thorny. Great as a hedge or additional barrier along a fence line or for use in bonsai.
